Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the US, is a performer and actress. in film, music and on television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced around the age of 10. Latifah went to Catholic school, and she was educated at Newark New Jersey. She was a member of in the Baptist church. Latifah means gentle and very kind. Her mother gave it to her at the age of aged eight. Latifah's 5'10" height made her a powerful performer during high school. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's original group, which included a number of MCs and producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who has signed Latifah and released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
